“Tumbling is the most exhilarating feeling ever,” says 15-year-old Elodie de Klerk (@twisting_ellie) “The feeling of flying through the air while twisting is so much fun. It often distracts me from other things going on and I use it as my escape.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “I discovered my true love for tumbling when I was 12 and began practicing almost every day at home. I was constantly determined to achieve new skills,” says Elodie. “I often get asked how I improved so fast, and the only thing I can answer is, ‘I have no fear.’ I’m never afraid to try new things. I know my general limits, but I’m not afraid to step outside of the box a little bit. When I fall, I get back up again straight away and try again.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Elodie says she gets her motivation from the “gymternet,” the tumbling community on Instagram. “Everyone is always so supportive and encouraging towards one another, and seeing other people achieve new skills inspires me to do the same,” says Elodie who posts motivational statements alongside her videos to inspire others.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “I believe a little motivation every day can help someone realize how much they mean to people and that they have a place on this earth. I try to inspire people to follow their dreams and never give up.” ⁣⁣ #ThisWeekOnInstagram⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Video by @twisting_ellie

“I didn’t know that you could actually do tricks with a skateboard in the beginning,” says professional skateboarder Jonny Giger (@jonny_chinaski_giger) reminiscing on his early experiences of skateboarding as a young boy growing up in a small Swiss town.⁣ ⁣ After studying a freestyle trick book and watching online street skateboarding tutorials, “I somehow ended up mixing those two styles, which makes my skating kind of unique,” he says of his style that combines flat ground skating, tricks, flips and negotiating urban obstacles.⁣ ⁣ “I’m more the type of skater that enjoys learning new tricks. I don’t necessary like to repeat the same trick over and over again to make it look super stylish and push the perfection of it.”⁣ ⁣ “My favorite things about skateboarding is super simple stuff, like pushing around and getting my head clear and just focusing on the present, the now. The feeling of relief and joy when you finally land a trick after failing at it for, like, a hundred, up to a thousand tries or more. And watching beginners skate and see the joy they have when they land their first kickflips. It’s like a time machine.”⁣ #ThisWeekOnInstagram⁣ ⁣ Videos by @jonny_chinaski_giger

Action sport athlete Ryan “R-Willy” Williams (@rwillyofficial) has been going down to the skatepark ever since he can remember. “It all started when I was young and just wanted to hang with my mates and do whatever they we doing,” says the 26-year-old freestyle BMX and freestyle scooter rider. “I remember I used to be the only kid that Rollerbladed at the skatepark and I would have to borrow my mates’ shoes and scooter just to be able to have a ride.”⁣ ⁣ The path Ryan chose to becoming a professional rider was to have as much fun as possible. “That made me want to ride more, and ultimately, made me progress a lot quicker,” he says. “Riding BMX and scooter to me is the easiest way to express myself in my own kind of way. It’s almost like the skatepark is my canvas and my scooter and BMX are my brushes.”⁣ ⁣ “Within both BMX and scootering there are different categories of riding: street, park, dirt and Mega Ramp riding. I always try to ride everything and anything and have always focused on trying to be well-rounded at all the categories, but I think my biggest achievements have definitely been in Mega Ramp riding,” says Ryan, who has won three consecutive X Games BMX Big Air gold medals.⁣ ⁣ “My favorite thing about riding is the fact there is no right or wrong way to do it, you just freestyle with your own mind and whatever it thinks up you can go try and see if it will work.” ⁣ #ThisWeekOnInstagram⁣ ⁣ Video by @rwillyofficial

“I was always a mover,” explains 25-year-old ballerina Precious (@preciousagram) who studied at several top ballet schools around the world before joining the English National Ballet, where she is currently a first artist.⁣ ⁣ “When I was about 16, the narrative of being Black in ballet really started to come to the forefront,” says Precious, who is originally from Michigan. “I really see it as a narrative projected onto my life because I never thought that it was a ‘thing.’ I always just thought of myself as a girl who wanted to dance.”⁣ ⁣ Precious is credited with opening up the conversation of ballet dancers wearing tights and shoes that match their skin tone. In 2018, Precious made the decision to wear brown tights — rather than the traditional pink.⁣ ⁣ “I am just playing my part moving forward and helping shape an art form that is inclusive,” she says. “I think people think of diversity as a potentially risky or scary thing, but I know I am qualified to do what I do, so actually I just have to keep taking up space in a positive way with a big smile on my face.”⁣ ⁣ “There is so much beauty and depth to being a Black woman that I am only just tapping into. The more I have discovered about all the facets and leaned into who I am as a Black woman, the more I have had agency and purpose within myself. You stop seeking any confirmation about your identity from anywhere except from that voice in your own head.”⁣ ⁣ #ShareBlackStories⁣ ⁣ Photo of @preciousagram by @tiialaukkanen
