People like to say that in order to move on you have to forgive the abuser. I have heard this from a few people since starting my healing journey. Initially, I panicked at that concept, thinking "I dont know how I'm ever going to be able to move on" I thought how stuck I felt in the idea that until I forgave my abuser, I couldn't BE better. I would have to swallow more shit to heal??? How could that be true? But you know what I have come to understand? I don't ever NEED to forgive my abuser. Never. I only need to forgive myself. I've started doing that. I hope to find some indifference towards them and maybe something forgiveness adjacent will come. But I don't ever foresee being able to forgive THEM. I am COMPLETELY at peace with that. I know now that I am healing without forgiving them. That I am capable of so much more than I thought. I'm not stuck. I can show myself the compassion necessary to make it through to the other side. To move into the light. Telling a trauma and abuse survivor that in order to heal they must forgive the person who gravely hurt them is invalidating and wrong. The only rule here is no self-blame/shame. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Accept with compassion any uncomfortable truths that may arise. When you feel complete with the big, messy emotions, try to finish with love. How can you reframe your perception of this topic? How can you put yourself in a place of power? Going forward, how can you think or feel about this topic in a way that benefits you? I’m gonna get uncomfortable for a second, so I hope you stick with me. ⁣ ⁣ Why?⁣ ⁣ Because I 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 in the depths of my soul that it will help someone reading this. Maybe you. ⁣ ⁣ The first time I was sexually assaulted (is that the word to use when a 15 year old has sex with a 6 year old? I don’t know) I was six. ⁣ ⁣ Second time, also 6. Different person. ⁣ ⁣ From the ages of 6 to 25 I’ve had 6 negative sexual experiences - whether that’s assault or forcefulness or abuse or being taking advantage of. 𝗦 𝗜 𝗫⁣ ⁣ But this post isn’t about those events, it’s about 𝘏𝘖𝘞 those events impacted me then and how they still do now. ⁣ ⁣ I think women in general have some insecurities and anxieties about sex - how do I look? What about my cellulite? My boobs are saggy. My belly has rolls. What if I’m not what my partner wants? And more. ⁣ ⁣ But when you have experienced childhood sexual trauma, your brain doesn’t grow to look at sex as something good and you don’t want to feel sexy. ⁣ ⁣ It’s not love. ⁣ It’s not desired. ⁣ It’s something to be avoided. ⁣ ⁣ It can be, and is, hard. ⁣ ⁣ But I’m working through it. ⁣ ⁣ My biggest tips?⁣ • Communicate with your partner about 𝙚 𝙫 𝙚 𝙧 𝙮 𝙩 𝙝 𝙞 𝙣 𝙜 you are feeling.⁣ • Practice accepting your body naked in front of a mirror and be thankful for every ‘flaw’ because it’s a part of your story. ⁣ • Find a therapist. This one is really important because medication (for anxiety/depression from events) is only going to help so much. A psychologist trained in trauma will help, even when it’s hard and scary. I’m in the process of starting #EMDR therapy. ⁣ • Find someone to talk to that isn’t your partner. Even though communicating with them is essential, you still want to be able to create intimacy and love with them, so it helps having another safe person. ⁣ • Connect with others. Either through social media or a support group. It’s way more common than you think and you are not alone. Trust me. ⁣ • Use lubricant and don’t be afraid to! Sometimes our brains and body physiology don’t mesh. That’s okay! ⁣ ⁣ Find a way to love yourself and do not let what others did to you define who you are or what you deserve. ⁣ ⁣*Cont’d 👇🏻
